A record field of 150 entries turned out for the 2012 Dune2Dune on a perfect day for racing albeit a hot one . The swim took place in near perfect conditions , with a light breeze making the bike course bearable and the shorter than advertised runs a welcome relief to most.
In the short course event the course was smashed by local team Good Morning Vietnam consisting of Elliot Gin , Nick Aitken and Dale Donohue. Nick who is recently home from racing overseas was in good form returning a time of around 28 minutes for the 20k bike leg. Finishing first less than 2 minutes behind was Tim Guillefollowed by young Nick McGuirewith Daryn James in 3rd.Next in was new BCB club member Greg Bill. The team of 3 generations “Shaw Gang ” put in credditable performance with a time of 55:45 with local Ken Shaw aged 79 doing the bike leg. Sixteen year old Laura Butler left the rest of the women’s field well behind withAlison Slater in second and Kate Watkins in third.
There was disappointment in the long course with the withdrawal of two prominent locals early on the bike leg due to mechanical failures ,particularly for Deb Reilly who first female out of the water (13 th overall ). It was Magnus Michelsson leading most of the way with a great time of 1:37:52 who took out the event . Mack Clarkson was second with race veteran Paul Taylor in third. Tony Duffy again performed well placing 4th. First local home was Thierry Rolland in 8th overall. The rapidly improving Darren Thompson again performed well just ahead of new club member Cam Wright . The women’s race was taken out in just under two hours with Aimee Schicker second and new club member Raeleigh Harris third. Thanks all for great race .
