Barracudas join the Healthy Sporting Environments Program

Congratulations to Bass Coast Triathlon Club

GippSport would like to congratulate the Bass Coast Triathlon Club as they have become an active participant of the VicHealth Healthy Sporting Environments Program.  The club is the first triathlon club in Gippsland to sign up to the state-wide program which looks at specific areas within the sporting club landscape with a focus on health benefits.

The program which is available to regional clubs across Victoria is limited to fifty in the whole of Gippsland. Club President, Gavin Slavin believes the program will provide a great framework for the club, ‘Our members are actively trying to improve their health by competing in the sport of triathlon. The Healthy Sporting Environments program will provide us with the information and support to provide a safe and healthy environment for the athletes in our club.  It will also help us to promote the sport to even more people in the local community”.

The six areas that the Triathlon Club will look to work on are responsible use of alcohol, UV protection, healthy eating, reducing tobacco use, inclusion for all and injury prevention and management.  ‘Our events are more than just places that promote physical activity – they’re also places where the community gathers and are ideal for promoting health and wellbeing in a social and relaxed environment,’  GippSport Program Coordinator Michelle Harris indicated.

The Bass Coast Barracuda’s are well known for providing three triathlon events in Bass Coast Shire each year, as well as the Bass Coast Cycle Challenge and Keeping Kids on Track Fun run.  The club has recently been nominated for a VicHealth- Victorian Health Promotion Foundation Award for the work that they have been doing to promote participation in their events and for their strong links within the community.

The program is funded until June 2014 enabling clubs to move through the modules at a pace that suits their circumstances.  Clubs are starting to see real benefits from being involved in the HSE Program and any clubs interested in joining or getting more information should contact Michelle Harris on  E: michelle@gippsport.com.au T: 5674 6004 M: 0428 358 335.

Breaking News September 2013

The latest is of course the recent performance of two of our members in the World 70.3 Championship in Las Vegas. On what must have been a tough day on the heat Phil Hanley placed 2nd on his age group whilst Raeleigh Harris came in 6th. We know they have both worked hard and have now reaped the rewards.
