Inverloch turned on a glorious summer’s day with a record field of 76 entries on a very hot day for the Esplanade Hotel Twilight Triathlon. The swim was on the of the top of the high tide giving a fair swim in a slack current and perfect water conditions. Matt Clark exited the water first with Matt Sullivan in hot pursuit.Local Barracuda Nathan Dunlop was third into T1 but passed a Cesare Granata , visiting from Italy in transition. Rosie Bourke and Kara Landells entered T1 with only seconds between them . Competitors enjoyed a light tail tail wind on the way out on the bike leg to Cape Paterson to find out after the turn they were going to have to work a little harder on the way back. At the bike turn it was Matt Clark still ahead of Matt Sullivan in the men’s field with Rosie Bourke clearing out well ahead of the rest of the women’s field . Matt Sullivan gained ground on Matt Clark passing him in the final stages of the bike leg and was first to enter T2 . Competitors were to find the run hard going in the heat especially after the turn on the path at the angling club . Ice was generously offered to cool the athletes down but think most of us would have preferred to jump back in the water. Matt Sullivan put in a solid run performance to get his second win at Inverloch , for the season finishing 15 seconds ahead of Matt Clark. Cesare Granata from Italy was a minute further back in 3rd ahead of local athlete Thierry Rolland with Thierry recording a very impressive fastest run split the only one under 18 minutes.. First of the Barracudas was Phil Hanley in 8th overall .In the women’s race Rosie Bourke ,
9th overall , finished well ahead . Kara landells was second with Sharyn Cairns third . First team was Team Invy . The Barracudas were lead by Phil Hanley ahead of Nathan Dunlop and Brian Martin . Jenny Merrick lead ahead of Jenny Hollins with impressing all with her swim split.
A special thanks goes to Race Director Deb Rielly for her sterling efforts on the day . We would like to acknowledge our major sponsors , Alex Scott , the Esplanade Hotel and Crossover Cycles. Thanks to all volunteer groups and helpers for turning up and assisting us in the heat including the Inverloch Surf Lifesaving Club , SES , and Coastal Crewzers.
